WMHT Opens Doors of New High-Tech Public Broadcasting Center

On November 10th, WMHT General Manager Deborah Onslow and her team officially opened the doors to their new digital public broadcasting center and unveiled state-of-the-art technology that will revolutionize the region’s overall public television experience.WMHT

Located in Troy, NY the facility is equipped with new digital technology that enables the station to extend its broadcasting range, dramatically increase picture and sound quality, and make new interactive teaching tools and programming options possible for all users in the community.

In addition, the station’s two new production studios and enhanced production services division make it possible for WMHT to produce significantly more high-quality, locally-focused programs. Attending the event was New York State Senator Joseph Bruno who announced a $500,000 grant to support the ACE Solutions technology which now drives WMHT’s Broadcast Operations Center. These funds will help equip WMHT with multicasting capabilities for its award-winning programs via a current analog broadcast, as well as up to three additional digital streams of programming.

WMHT is the first PBS station in the country to employ PBS’s ACE Solutions. In order to meet federal mandate, WMHT purchased a digital tower and transmitter, a new facility capable of supporting digital technology, and all new digital broadcasting and production equipment.

Through both public and private sources, WMHT has raised approximately $4 million of the final $5 million needed to meet the ultimate goal of $20 million necessary to complete the station's transition to digital broadcasting.

This new facility will allow WMHT to enhance their creativity and promote the independent spirit of public broadcasting in the region.
